The first time out

Mansfield opens its boys’ cross-country season against Canton.

Before the start, Mansfield’s boys drew together on the grass, arms around one another’s shoulders. Then the circle broke. Green singlets moved toward the line, and the first meet of the season was about to begin.

Canton was the opponent for the September 16 opener. The afternoon brought the teams onto a course of open grass and shaded trail, with orange cones and yellow tape marking the way. Beside the course stood the red David and Abigail Tilden House, a still point among the runners and spectators.

From the line to the trees

At the start, the runners stood spread across the grass. Once they were away, the broad line became a moving group: green Mansfield uniforms alongside Canton’s dark singlets, arms driving as they crossed the field.

The view changed at the woods. Trunks framed a narrower path, and sunlight fell in patches across the ground. Runners came through in small groups, with others following farther along the trail. Out on the open grass, there was room to see the gaps between them.

The course brought different runners into view at different moments. A Mansfield pair ran with a Canton runner between them. Elsewhere, two runners came across the grass side by side. Along the taped boundary, spectators watched as the field continued past.

One meet into the season

The afternoon’s story belonged to more than the runners at the front. Teammates were still making their way around the course, each with the same turns and stretches of grass to cover. The close circle before the start had become a team spread along the route.

Mansfield came away with a win in its first meet. There would be another race, and another starting line, but the season was underway: one meet completed, and a first win to build on.
